David Knowles' Diary 1837-1839

For two years my great-great grandfather kept a diary (which follows below). Apart from recording the daily life of a stonemason in rural South Yorkshire, the most remarkable part of the account is that of the Campsall "Society for the Acquisition of Knowledge".  This society arose when the eccentric family of Mr. Charles Wood rented Campsall Hall and employed several young learned gentlemen - English and European - to tutor their sons Neville, Willoughby and Charles Junior. The father, Charles Thorold Wood (1777/06/15, Alford, Lincs - 1852/03/13, Campsall Hall), son of Willoughby Wood (Sr.) had been a captain in the Royal Horse Guards, and was himself an ornithologist (Mullens). The mother Jane was an early adherent of homeopathy (McOuat). Neville (1818-) at this time was editor of a journal called "The Naturalist" (Sheppard), a contributor to "The Analyst" (McOuat) and had, in 1836, published "The Ornithologist's Text-Book (John W. Parker, London). He later went to London and led the Homeopathic movement there (McOuat). Their tutors earned some extra income by giving lessons to the locals.  My great-great grandfather was a very willing student and was particularly fond of Mr. Chiosso, later professor of gymnastics at University College London and inventor of the Polymachinon (forerunner of the modern exercise machine), and "Mr. Lancaster" i.e.Edwin Lankester (1814-74) , later MD, FRS. Also at the Woods', although not mentioned in Knowles' diary was Leonhard Schmitz.

The "Petition for [sic] Slavery" mentioned in May 1838 was possibly connected with a presentation by escaped Floridan slave Moses Roper, given the month before in nearby Sheffield (Brown).

Of his family, David Knowles writes of the death of his brother Jonathan, the marriage of his sister Catherine, his schoolteacher brother James, and his father, Thomas.
On 1838/10/28 David writes of a "wedding at our house".  The details (from Linda Peabody via Janet Manning) seem to be:
Isaac Spink bach 21 yrs servant of Burghwallis, father John Spink labourer.
Mary Ann Palmer spin. 18 yrs servant of Moss, father Richard Palmer labourer (both signed "x")
Witnesses George Wright and George Pearson
Possibly one or both were servants in the Knowles household. A couple called Spink were long-time friends of my grandmother.

MY DIARY 1837

Schofield of Doncaster in the evening. He called again and said there was little or no hope of his recovery. I never shall forget that evening when seated by the fire when my father burst into tears and with a most lamentable tone of voice exhorted him to prepare for another world he wept and they all wept except me who told them that wile there was life there was hope. that night passed away in which he was more composed than he was the night before.
